Back in January the Population Reference Bureau raised concerns about planned testing and operational protocols for the 2030 census. The PRB was founded in 1929 and is a bi-partisan, non-for-profit research organization that has worked with the U.S. Census Bureau for decades.
The January report highlighted four areas of concern, one of which was the reduction of test sites from six to two, and the fact that those two sites do not accurately represent the demographics of the country for several reasons. Those tests are now underway.
Additional concerns raised are no plans to test a non-English version of the questionnaire, Postal Workers being tapped to replace Census Workers in many roles, that the American Community Survey instrument will be used for the test rather than a Census instrument, and several other aspects of the testing infrastructure. They are especially concerned about the impact of these plans, if implemented for the full census, on getting accurate counts in rural areas and among vulnerable population groups.

If you are an economic developer, you may or may not be able to influence how the census is implemented, but you can position yourself to champion your community. Start early to explain why local participation is so important, and continue to monitor any discrepancies between your local data sources and official data releases.
