It might seem strange to be featuring a program that works on easing the journey to work when so many aren’t making that journey at all, but I’m really impressed by Lowcountry GO.  This initiative by the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments (they even have an app!) is focused on helping people find transportation options across the spectrum of modes.  It came to my attention when I saw an article (probably on LinkedIn, but I’m not sure) about their involvement in developing a strategy and funding for van pools to connect rural residents with no mass transit options to jobs in the high growth areas of the region.  The van pooling initiative is the result of a study that codified what was obvious to all – even in a high growth area with skills shortages, unemployment is higher in places where the journey to work is a key obstacle.  You can read about the study here.
