Michigan’s new Futures for Frontliners initiative now offers free high school completion and community college tuition directly to individuals classified as essential workers in the late spring and early summer of 2020.  It is funded with federal CARES money and applications are due to be cut off at the end of 2020, but so far 85,000 people have applied.  Like many states, Michigan has a goal to increase the number of residents who have finished high school and attained additional certifications and degrees.  This program was inspired by the idea of the G.I. Bill, and it suits the spirit of the times.  What’s even better, in my opinion, is the attention that is being paid to gathering the stories of the people who are using the programs to change their circumstances.  Hopefully the inspiration and examples they share will fuel momentum so that when this money runs out the work will go on.
