Promise programs are getting some new twists, and Birmingham’s Second Chance Scholarship pilot, supported by The Aspen Institute, is a great example.This program is targeted at recent high school graduates who missed a window to immediately continue their education due to challenges such as housing and/or food insecurity, excessive absenteeism, or justice involvement.
Two community colleges are participating in this small pilot that offers last-dollar tuition assistance for certificate or associates programs. Critically, these students also have access to Birmingham Promise success coaches.
