What’s a “donut” in data visualization?  It can be a version of a pie chart, but in this case I’m talking about the popular style of presenting a REALLY BIG NUMBER in a circle and then below or to the side a tiny print explanation of what the number represents.  In fact, in many cases, it’s a row of donuts that sometimes reference numbers that aren’t even aspects of the same topic.  And sometimes they spin, or twirl, or expand or contract just in case you weren’t noticing them.
The brain, at least one trained in U.S. English reads from top to bottom.  And, it’s drawn to the big bold thing before the tiny thing.
That means when you use this type of design, especially without a subject matter heading above it, you are counting on people to be SO curious about what that great big number means that they will read the fine print.
 In this era of TLDR, does that sound like a good bet?
